Can you taste chemicals?

Sometimes when I know I am eating something that isnt organic, usually produce, I think I can taste the pesticides and gross chemicals. Am I becoming too much of a purist? Has this happened to anyone else?

I think this article does a good job of pointing out what's really wrong with the chain:

Does anyone know a way to get rid of earwigs (aka pincher bugs) and the cutworms who attacked my potatoes?
I've tried the oil in a tuna can trick and it didn't faze the earwigs.
Going loco trying to get rid of them in an organic way.
Thanks.

Organic Amway??

A co-worker and I were recently talking about organic products and she said the only products she uses for cleaning are Amway because they are all organic and have been since the 60's. She even claims their packaging materials are corn based and dissipate completely in water. I knew they made a product call Liquid Organic Cleaner but I figured they were taking advantage of the fact that the term "Organic" is fairly fluid.

I tried to do some searching online but it seems most of the websites I can find are all Amway bases sources. What do you fine folks know about how Amway does business? Are they good stewards of the earth where their products come from? What about their manufacturing and production facilities? I'd love to hear what you know.

Help Bring Wind Power to Nebraska!!

"At a time when renewable energy is all the rage, one of the windiest states in the nation seems unlikely to spur new projects because of a tight budget with little wiggle room.

State senators introduced measures Tuesday to provide tax credits, teachers, a task force and other ways to promote alternative energy such as wind power, solar power and natural gas.

Gov. Dave Heineman has told lawmakers that state government must tighten its belt as the stock market plummets and tax revenue falls."

-January 20,2009 ANNA JO BRATTON / The Associated Press

According to the American Wind Energy Association, Nebraska is ranked sixth in the nation with the greatest energy potential from wind power. In 2007, more than 200 million kilowatthours were generated by wind energy in Nebraska.

We need renewable energy to be a priority!! It will help bring clean and renewable energy into a state that has the ability to create it!

Help this become a priority by sending a letter to Nebraska State Governor Dave Heineman and by signing this petition.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/Help-Push-Renewable-Energy

I have built some large planter boxes out of redwood in which I'll plant organic vegetables and flowers. I want to line the inside of the boxes so they last longer (ie less soil to wood contact), but need to use a liner material that won't break down and leach chemicals. This is on an organic farm that will soon undergo certification so I need a materiel that won't hurt our veges nor compromise our organic certification process.

Tone: apple cider vinager (balances the ph)
Moisturize: jojoba oil is light and protective

I am doing some serious composting this year, as we are bringing back the soil in our yard to prepare for next year's "food not lawn" endeavor. I have started the compost pile and have alot of browns in there and need to add some greens definitely. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how often to water and turn the compost pile and should I keep it covered with at tarp or just let it be?

Plastic Bottle Ban?
Plastic Bottle Ban?
Manufacturers, retailers, and regulatory agencies consider eliminating a potentially harmful chemical from plastic sport and baby bottles.
By Lisa Farino

Responding to growing consumer concern, sports-bottle maker Nalgene announced today that it will be phasing out the use of the chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) in its plastic containers over the coming months.

BPA is a common building block of hard polycarbonate plastics (such as sports bottles, baby bottles, and eye glasses) and is also found in the resin lining of metal food and beverage cans.

Because BPA mimics estrogen, there has been increasing concern that exposure, especially by fetuses, newborns, and infants, may cause long-term health impacts such as early puberty in girls, reproductive problems, and cancers later in life.

Nalgene currently makes about a half-dozen different sports bottles, including ones made from stainless steel and also BPA-free plastics. Only one of its six bottle types includes BPA. Customers who wish to buy BPA-free sports bottles before Nalgene’s phase-out is complete can visit the Nalgene Choice website to learn more about Nalgene’s current BPA-free options.

Canada Plans BPA Ban

Across the border, retailers throughout Canada have been releasing plans to remove BPA-containing sports and baby bottles from their shelves. On Wednesday, Wal-Mart Canada announced that it would immediately stop selling baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, food containers, and water bottles that contain BPA.

Many of these retail changes followed an anonymous media leak earlier this week that Health Canada would declare BPA to be toxic.

The official announcement came today as Canada’s Minister of Health, Tony Clement, declared that the Canadian government is taking action to reduce BPA exposure, especially in newborns and infants.

“We have immediately taken action on bisphenol-A (BPA) because we believe it is our responsibility to ensure families, Canadians and our environment are not exposed to a potentially harmful chemical,” said Clement.

The Government of Canada is proposing a ban on polycarbonate baby bottles and strict limits on BPA in infant formula cans. The government is also seeking to work with industry to develop alternative food packaging. A 60-day public comment period on the proposal will begin tomorrow.

Will the US Follow Suit?

On Tuesday, the National Institute of Health’s National Toxicology Program (NTP) released its draft brief on BPA, which found that current levels of exposure to the chemical did pose “some concern” for fetuses, infants, and children. The main concerns were that exposures in these groups could potentially cause neural and behavioral problems, impact the prostate and mammary glands, and contribute to earlier onset of puberty in girls.

There are no immediate plans in the U.S. to regulate BPA in food and beverage containers.

The report wasn’t intended to make recommendations, says John Bucher, Associate Director of the National Toxicology Program. Rather, the goal was to pull together the literature on the subject, conduct a thorough scientific analysis, and make that information available to regulatory agencies.

“All we can do is point out where the exposures are coming from,” said Bucher. The two biggest culprits he identified were polycarbonate baby bottles and the linings of infant formula cans.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that congressional Democrats were pushing for the FDA to regulate the presence of BPA in food containers and beverage bottles.

Although no regulatory agencies are required to take the report’s findings into account, Bucher says that some agencies—such as the FDA, the EPA, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission—could choose to use the NTP’s findings on BPA. Most likely, these agencies will, at the very least, wait until the draft report has been through a peer review process, which is scheduled for June 11, 2008.

Meanwhile, the NTP is accepting public comments about the BPA report.

What Should I Do?

While the NTP does not make specific recommendations about how other agencies should regulate BPA, they did offer the public some tips for reducing personal exposure if they were concerned. These included:

Don’t microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers. Polycarbonate is strong and durable, but over time it may break down from over use at high temperatures.
Polycarbonate containers that contain BPA usually have a #7 on the bottom.
Reduce your use of canned foods.
When possible, opt for glass, porcelain, or stainless steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids.
Use baby bottles that are BPA free.

In Love and Light

Pritam

Soft Scrub Alternative

Well, I have successfully replaced just about all the cleaners in my home with a "green" alternative- EXCEPT for my Soft Scrub! I have porcelain sinks and tubs and they get all kinds of marks and scratchs on them. So far Soft Scrub w/Bleach is the only thing that keeps them clean, but I really want to find an alternative. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Organic antiseptic solutions?

Hi~

I am looking for help with finding something herbal/organic that I can use on furniture that would freshen, deodorize, and also have some antiseptic quality. Looking for alternatives for chemical things like Febreeze and Lysol?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Ecocover, you rule my world!

I found this at Stater Bros, which has probably the slimmest eco and organic product lines available.

Some Beauty Products I Love

After changing out all of my beauty products to organic, I thought I'd reccommend my favorite products that are also paraben, laureth/laurel sulfate free, biodegradable and work really well. I wanted to provide an opinion from a consumer because I had a hard time finding information that wasn't from a retailer. I rated each product up to 5 stars.

Places to find these products: Whole Foods, Sprouts, drugstore.com, Target, CVS and Vitamin City in Long Beach, CA

Skin care and lotions:

***** Avalon Organics Vitamin C renewal face cream
This is great for moisturizing dry skin but doesn't leave a residue. It smells like orange candy. Cost $15-20 at any health food store

***** Avalon Organics Vitamin C hydrating cleansing milk
This works for both my husband's oily-sensitive skin and my dry-sensitive skin. I never wanted to try a milk cleanser before this but I took a chance and I will never use anything else. Even senitive skin cleansers made my face sting but not this stuff! Cost $16 at any health food store.

***** Neutrogena's pore-refining toner.
This in not an organic brand but it doesn't contain any bad chemicals. It does contain glycolic acid which is used in facial peels. It tightens the skin and smells lightly floral. It also costs less per oz. than most of the organic brands but does more for the face than most. I also put it into a spray bottle to get a perfect amount onto a cotton pad and on a rag to clean my make-up brushes everyday. Cost $7 at Target, $8+ drug stores

***** Kiss My Face Aromatherapeutic lotion
This lotion is fragrant with claims of antioxidant power. The thickness is medium--good for the body but not for the hands throughout the day. Try the honeysuckle tangerine and tea tree scents. Cost $8 on sale at Whole Foods, $7 Vitamin City, $9 Sprouts

***** Dessert Essence body creams
These are great for your hands and on dry skin. I highly reccommend the Vanilla Chai and Pumpkin Spice. Cost $8 at any health food store

***** Alba lip gloss
Kiss My Face has a similar lip gloss but isn't nearly as moisturizing. This is comparable to Burt's lip gloss but with a better flavor. Try the passion fruit or pineapple. Cost $3 at any health food store or CVS counters

***** Alba green tea sublock spf 30
This stuff smells fresh and soft on the skin all day. It applies easily and doesn't leave any residues. Works well even on oily skin. Cost $7 at Sprouts

Make-up:

**** Earth's Beauty foundation powder
Use it as base under other foundation powder if your skin is dry or sensitive. Doesn't give maximum coverage like most foundation powders but it's completely organic and was the only non-mica foundation powder I found on the internet or in stores. Includes spf 15. Cost $24 online at Apothena.com

***** Emani foundation powder
It does contain mica but is an organic alternative to i.d. minerals which runs $40 a container. Cost $15 at Vitamin City in Long Beach or other health stores.

Hair:

***** Jason Organics sea kelp shampoo and aloe vera conditioner
These are my favorite. They leave my long hair smelling, looking and feeling amazing. It's frequently on sale at Whole Foods. the aloe conditioner leaves the hair feeling lightweight and clean although it's hard to squeeze out of the bottle Jason also makes a dandruff shampoo and conditioner as well but with all the choices and smells, you'll want to pick a more fragrant selection. The apricot is good for damaged/dry hair. Cost $7-10 at any health product store.

***** Nature's Gate shampoos and conditioners
They are very inexpensive and have removed the dimethicone from the product recently. Beware, a little goes a long way with the condtioner. It leaves the hair feeling smooth and smells great. I reccommend the orange patchouli and chamomile sage scents. Cost $7 a bottle at Sprouts, Whole Foods, etc.

***** Lamas revitalizing shampoo and conditioner for
Good for damaged/dry hair or dandruff. It's made with Chinese herbs and can be applied all the way to the scalp. For ends, use a second application of conditioner. Cost $8 at Vitamin City in Long Beach, $12 Sprouts

**** Alba shampoo
This shampoo is very light and strips lots of dirt off your hair. It smells great but is a little drying. Cost $7 Vitamin City

***** Head Organics hair serum
This is a shine/anti-frizz polisher for all hair types. It's mostly chemical but not any chemicals that have been labelled bad. If you don't use a hair polisher, you should. It's for the ends of the hair, even if it's short or straight. This will smooth your ends, create shine and smells deliciously like cherry. This is a must if you color, blow dry, have long or curly hair. Cost $10 at Sprouts

***** Jason texturizing cream
This is for styling your hair just like a pomade. Use it to smooth ends on short hair or to style and blow dry short hair/bangs. You could add some serious volume to long hair if blow dried. The aloe bergamot scent is fresh. Use sparingly, a little goes a long way! I use a quarter of a dime-sized drop to style my bangs. The hold lasts all day, given that you don't sweat too much. Cost $8 CVS or Vitamin City

Soaps and cleaners:

**** Kiss My Face-Obsessively Organic foaming hand soaps
I can't express how delicious the bergamot mix and citrus sented hand soaps are. The only problem with these is the head of the foaming bottle doesn't stay forward and can be hard to press down. I'd love to see refills for these too. Cost $6 Vitamin City

***** Jason citrus scent body wash
Not only is Jason very affordable but they have great selections in scents. The only problem is that most of the handwashes and bodywashes tend to all have a similar jojoba scent. Cost $12 a pump bottle at any health product store

**** Method body washes. They're biodegrable and smell good--a little too good. They have a men's skin care line too but of course I haven't tried it. Cost $6+ at Target

***** Method house cleaners and hand soaps. I reccommend the sweet water and scented soaps, vanilla mix air freshners/candles, almond wood cleaner, peppermint bathroom cleaner, their glass cleaner and any of their dish soaps. I love that they have flushable wipes for the bathroom so you don't have to have germ-infested rags sitting in the trash. Their multi-purpose cleaner for the kitchen isn't as good as a 7th Generation's but it does the job most of the time. Cost $6+ They can easily be found at Target and CVS if you're in a major city.

***** 7th Generation multi-purpose cleaner
I replaced my 409 with this stuff. I even use it to clean pet accidents on carpet. It works almost as well as Zep or 409 on the stove, which is the most important thing since no one wants to scrub crust off a stove. Cost $7 at Whole Foods, Vitamin City or other health food store.

I don't reccommend:

* Alba conditioners:
They are very fragrant but overly drying and leave the hair extra rough and frizzy looking. The shampoos are great at stripping the hair of dirt but the conditioner doesn't replenish the moisture.

** Aubrey Organics sunscreens:
They smell good but are so thick that after rubbing on even a thin layer of sunscreen, the skin has a residue of white on it. The feel remains greasy as well.

** Jason light leave-in conditioner
It smells good but doesn't smooth ends well at all. It can be used to style and blow dry but is too heavy to last all day. It gets a greasy residue after a few hours.

* Any face scrubs containing walnut or apricot seeds.
The shells are too jagged and scratch the skin's surface, causing tons of tiny scars on the skin. The best alternative is Alba's seaweed scrub but it still contains dimethicone so it gets *** stars. If anyone has found a face scrub dense with scrubbers, please reply!

Hi y'all! I am starting a new business and will be getting a canopy and such. I know that pvc is not environment friendly and would like to use alternatives. I was thinking of using bamboo, how, I am not sure yet.

Suggestions anyone?

Imported Chinese Organics

The place I usually buy my bulk organics from has started selling almost all Chinese imported bulk foods. Given all the dangerous foods that have come from there I am not very comfortable with eating it or giving it to my children. Have any of you found yourselves in this situation recently? What do you all think of organics from China?

Organic Green Tea Toner

Organic Green Tea Toner

2 oz.Organic Green Tea
5 drops Organic Lavender essential oil
5 drops Organic Geranium essential oil

I like to use Young Living Therapeutic grade organic essential oils.
Mix up this bottle of tea and essential oils to balance the pH of your skin
after cleansing. It's easy... it's cooling... and it leaves
your skin feeling refreshed! Place the ingredients in a glass bottle.
Essential oils do not dissolve in water or tea so be sure to shake
this mixture well before each use to make sure the essential oils are
dispersed. Use a cotton pad to apply to face and neck area after
cleansing.

Organic Diets Lower Children's Dietary Exposure To Common Agriculture Pesticides

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, September 23, 2005: A study led by an Emory University researcher concludes that an organic diet given to children provides a "dramatic and immediate protective effect" against exposures to two pesticides that are commonly used in U.S. agricultural production. The results were published on a recent online version of the scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP). Over a fifteen-day period, Dr. Chensheng "Alex" Lu and his colleagues from Emory University, the University of Washington, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specifically measured the exposure of two organophosphorus pesticides (OP)--malathion and chlorpyrifos--in 23 elementary students in the Seattle area by testing their urine. The participants, ages 3-11-years-old, were first monitored for three days on their conventional diets before the researchers substituted most of the children's conventional diets with organic food items for five consecutiv e days. The children were then re-introduced to their normal foods and monitored for an additional seven days. "Immediately after substituting organic food items for the children's normal diets, the concentration of the organophosphorus pesticides found in their bodies decreased substantially to non-detectable levels until the conventional diets were re-introduced," says Dr. Lu.

During the days when children consumed organic diets, most of their urine samples contained zero concentration for the malathion metabolite. However, once the children returned to their conventional diets, the average malathion metabolite concentration increased to 1.6 parts per billion with a concentration range from 5 to 263 parts per billion, Dr. Lu explains. A similar trend was observed for chlorpyrifos. Former research has linked organophosphorus pesticides to causes of neurological effects in animals and humans. "Recent regulatory changes aiming to minimize children's exposures to pesticides have either banned or restricted the use of many organophosphorus pesticides in the residential environment. However, fewer restrictions have been imposed in agriculture," Dr. Lu says. The study was funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Cachaça Gabriela - Organic

Cachaça Gabriela - Organic

Cachaça Gabriela is my name. Explaining: cachaça is the same of spirit, schnaps, eau de vie. That's a brazilian name for the spirit made from the sugar cane juice. Typical from Brazil.

But, I'm better than the cachaças I know you already know: I'm organic and artisan made.
That means that we follow the principles to being totally integrated with the environment. Plants are grown without any kind of chemical products giving the sugar cane full organic status. And the way I am produced is really similar to an art: we have to have patience and wait for my right time to drink: at least one year I rest at brazilian's wood barrels: jequitibá-rosa, amburana, bálsamo, amendoim.

I bought my husband a new wallet for our anniversary. Since then I've got the old wallet sitting here. It's not in good enough shape to go to Goodwill (I wouldn't have gotten him another if it weren't falling apart, literally), so what to do with it?

Anyone have any creative ideas for reuse, or anywhere I can send it to recycle it? It's a trifold, mostly leather with a plastic ID slot and there's some fabric where the money goes.

URGENT: Please help keep local control over GM seed.

On June 28th, the California State Assembly Agriculture Committee will consider a bill (SB 1056) that will take away local government authority over seed regulation. If passed, this bill will override restrictions on genetically engineered crops and seeds, as well as all other local regulation of seeds.

In 2005, a groundswell of organizational and citizen response stopped the California pre-emption attempts - we need your help to prevent the passage of this bill once and for all.

1. Call, email or fax your own Assembly member to ask them to oppose SB1056. Cal GE-Free coalition member, True Food Network http://www.truefoodnow.org/ has set up an online action page or using the sample letter below. Call your local elected officials and encourage them to do the same.

2. Attend the Assembly Agriculture Committee hearing in Sacramento on June 28th to voice your opposition (for more details, contact Becky at 510-647-3733 or becky@calgefree.org)

3. Spread the word! http://www.gmwatch.org/archive2.asp?arcid=6650

Sample letter

[Your Assembly member](find who it is at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html)
State Capitol
P.O. Box 942849
Sacramento, CA 94249-0000
cc: The Honorable Barbara Matthews
Chair, Assembly Agriculture Committee
1020 N St., Rm 362
Sacramento, CA 95814

RE: Pre-emption of local authority with SB 1056—PLEASE OPPOSE

Dear Assembly member:

I am very concerned that there will be an attempt in the 2006 legislative session to pass legislation that will pre-empt local authority and I want to record my STRONG OPPOSITION to this. During the 2005 legislative session there were two attempts to amend bills in legislative committees with language that would prohibit counties, towns and cities from passing any local regulation on seeds (AB1508 and SB1056). Such attempts are an anti-democratic attack on the rights of local citizens and local governments to act in a legal manner to protect their interests, which are not otherwise protected by law.

I urge you to oppose any attempts to limit local jurisdiction over seeds and crops.

Sincerely,
(your name)

hey...

anyone notice the picture that pops up for this tribe is the "USDA Organic" logo? hmmm....with the current attack on organic standars, seems like this undermines the nature of real organic fruits, vegetables, grains, etc. I'm not trying to start shit, but it seems like this tribe should have a logo that is truely representative of real organic methods. but then again, i realize that in some places, "USDA Organic" is a big deal....guess i'm just spoiled living in the bay area.

OMO is a coalition of famers/producers, distributors, retailers and consumers who pledge the utmost allegiance to the integrity and the ethic of organics, not necessarily to the label. We insist that there can be NO LEGITIMATE COMPROMISE to this integrity, and we will demand nothing less of ourselves in our economic choices. And we will not abandon those who have beenfaithful to the ethic --we will give them the voice they have earned!

I think we could be at the cusp of something truly beautiful, and I hope you will choose to get involved. Any degree of participation is most welcome and extremely appreciated!!!

Horizon Organics -- Another Disgusting Factory Farm with Great Advertising

TROUBLE ON THE HORIZON

Horizon Organic Dairy is America's leading producer of organic milk and dairy products with sales of over $50 million per year.

The people at Horizon want you to believe that their cows are so happy, that they've trademarked the phrase "HAPPY COWS."

Horizon's press kit includes a re-printed article, originally excerpted from Rodale's "Your Organic Kitchen."

The opening paragraph, accompanied by a photo of "happy cows" in a tranquil field setting, reads:

"Although Horizon Organic Dairy doesn't claim that its Happy Cows are sacred, the nation's leading organic dairy treats its most honored employees like deities."

According to my year-2000 almanac, there are about 4 million Jews in America and over 5 million Muslims. There are one million Hindus. The rest of Americans worship as their "deity," Jesus.

Wasn't Jesus nailed to a cross? Didn't Jesus "die for man's sins?"

That's no way to treat a deity, and Horizon farms seems to be doing just that. After their cows are milked, what becomes their fate?

They end up dying for man's meat consumption. Our sins against their health and happiness.

In India, where cows are worshipped as gods, these gentle animals live free, walking the streets as protected wards of the state. On Horizon's farms, their "deities" end up tortured, dying alone with great fear and then pain. The blood from their cut throats sprays out by the gallon, staining workers, flooding the slaughterhouse floors, causing the animals to gurgle and choke on their own blood.

Horizon pretends to have happy cows, yet these animal's udders become so large that it is necessary to milk them three times per day. Most dairy farms milk their cows once or twice each day.

Horizon pretends to have happy family farms, but nothing could be more distant from the truth. On March 9th, 1999, the World Street Journal wrote:

"Horizon buys about 40% of its milk from other organic-dairy operations, but it has two farms of its own, in Idaho with 3,700 milking cows, and Maryland with 500 cows. The company is looking to establish a third farm...and have a capacity for 2,000 cows..."

Folks, Horizon runs a factory-farm operation. I've investigated the Idaho farm which actually contains nearly 7,000 cows. Each animal produces 80 pounds of body wastes daily. That's 560,000 pounds of excrement and urine each day entering Idaho's environment.

How does Horizon fool so many people all of the time?

They have just purchased 600 acres of property (known as the George Dairy Property) next to the Nature Conservancy's 40,000 acre Cosumnes River Preserve.

At last! An organization ready, willing, and able to protest another factory farm and the ensuing pollution, right? Wrong!

Horizon and the Nature Conservancy have cooperated together for the past year on this project, and obtained government funding for this acquisition. More cows, more pollution. When the cows no longer give milk and have outlived their usefulness, they will have their heads bashed and necks slashed. Their body parts will be cut into smaller pieces by men with sharp knives, and they shall feed the masses. Such is the fate of Horizon Farms' deities. Hallelulah!

Oh yes...organic milk. The healthiest milk from the healthiest cow is naturally loaded with lactoferrins, immunoglobulins, and growth hormones. Horizon's organic milk contains animal fat and cholesterol, dioxins, and bacteria. The amount of somatic cells (pus) in organic milk is lower than milk from non-organic cows, but it's still dead white blood cells and dead bacteria. Ask yourself this question. Does organic human breast milk sound like a delicious drink for an adult human? Instinctively, most people know that there are substances in breast milk that are not intended for their adult bodies. Same goes for pig's milk and dog's milk. Same for cow's milk.

Some people may not be able to tolerate lactose, a milk sugar. One hundred percent of humans are allergic to casein, a milk protein. Eighty percent of the protein in Horizon's organic dairy products is casein, the same glue used to adhere a label to a bottle of beer. Eat casein and your body produces histamines, then mucous. This sludge congests your organs. Give up all milk and dairy products for just one week and an internal "fog" will lift from your body.

Is genetically engineered milk dangerous? You bet! Organic milk contains just a little bit less of the same hormones. I find very little difference between the two.

Hi,
If anyone is interested. I have been living an organic lifestyle for 10 years and about a year ago I discovered personal care products that meet the food grade standard for certified organic. They are truly what they say they are....the only way to tell if a product is truthful is to read the ingredients list.

If you are interested you can purchase them online at: www.certified-organic-bodycare.com

If you have questions about any of the products feel free to ask me. I have been using them for about a year and I really like the skin care and health product (a probiotic which is the worlds only 100% certified organic probiotic).

Regards,
Erin

Vote No on H.R. 4167 - Contact your Congressman

Hi,
I ran across this action alert and thought you'd be interested in it. It's from the Organic Consumers Association:
---------------------

**Congress Poised to Pass Bill Taking Away Your Right to Know What's in Your Food**

**Tell your Congressman or Congresswoman to vote "No" on House of Representatives Bill H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act," coming to a vote in Washington, D.C this Thursday, March 2**

The House of Representatives will vote this week on a controversial "national food uniformity" labeling law that will take away local government and states' power to require food safety food labels such as those required in California and other states on foods or beverages that are likely to cause cancer, birth defects, allergic reactions, or mercury poisoning. This bill would also prevent citizens in local municipalities and states from passing laws requiring that genetically engineered foods and ingredients such as Monsanto's recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) be labeled.

The House will vote March 2, 2006 on a bill that would gut state food safety and labeling laws. H.R. 4167, the "National Uniformity for Food Act," lowers the bar on food safety by overturning state food safety laws that are not "identical" to federal law. Hundreds of state laws and regulations are at risk, including those governing the safety of milk, fish, and shellfish. The bill is being pushed by large supermarket chains and food manufacturers, spearheaded by the powerful Grocery Manufacturers of America.

Big food corporations and the biotech industry understand that consumers are more and more concerned about food safety, genetic engineering, and chemical-intensive agriculture, and are reading labels more closely. They understand that pesticide and mercury residues and hazardous technologies such as genetic engineering and food irradiation will be rejected if there are truthful labels required on food products. Industry-sponsored H.R. 4167 is gaining momentum and must be stopped! Act now! Preserve local and regional democracy and protect yourself and your family from unsafe food by sending an email or calling your Representative and urging them to vote "No" on H.R. 4167.

Please Take Action Now--Send a Message to Your Congress Member in the House of Representatives to Vote "No" on H.R. 4167
http://www.organicconsumers.org/rd/labeling.cfm

Saw it here but the vote is this week

URGENT!!!!! SNEAK ATTACK ON ORGANIC STANDARDS!!!!!

URGENT!!! CONGRESS VOTES NEXT WEEK!!!!! SEND A LETTER TO YOUR CONGRESSPERSON VIA www.organicconsumers.org/sos.cfm !!!!! PASS THE WORD ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!

Background of the Sneak Attack

After 35 years of hard work, the U.S. organic community has built up a multi-billion dollar alternative to industrial agriculture, based upon strict organic standards and organic community control over modification to these standards.

Now, large corporations, such as Kraft, Wal-Mart, & Dean Foods--aided and abetted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and members of the Organic Trade Association, are moving to lower organic standards by allowing Bush appointees in the USDA National Organic Program to approve a broad list of synthetic ingredients and processing aids that would be allowed in organic production. Even worse these proposed regulatory changes will reduce future public discussion and input and take away the National Organic Standards Board’s (NOSB) traditional lead jurisdiction in setting standards. What this means, in blunt terms. is that USDA bureaucrats and industry lobbyists, not consumers, will have near total control over what can go into organic foods and products. (Send a quick letter to your Congresspersons online here)

During the next week, acting in haste and near-total secrecy, the U.S. Congress plans to vote on a rider in the House/Senate Conference Committee to the 2006 Agriculture Appropriations Bill that could take away control over organic standards from the National Standards Board and put this control in the hands of federal bureaucrats in the USDA (remember the USDA proposal in 1997-98 that said that genetic engineering, toxic sludge, and food irradiation would be OK on organic farms, or USDA suggestions in 2004 that heretofore banned pesticides, hormones, tainted feeds, and animal drugs would be OK?).

For the past week in Washington, OCA has been urging members of Congress not to reopen and subvert the federal statute that governs U.S. Organic standards (the Organic Food Production Act: OFPA), but rather to let the organic community and the National Organic Standards Board resolve our differences over issues like synthetics and animal feed internally, and then proceed to a open public comment period. Unfortunately most Senators seem to be listening to industry lobbyists more closely than to us. We need to raise our voices. (Send a quick letter to your Congresspersons online here)

In the past, grassroots mobilization and mass pressure by organic consumers have been able to stop the USDA and Congress from degrading organic standards. This time Washington insiders tell us that the "fix is already in." So we must take decisive action now. We need you to call your U.S. Senators today. We need you to sign the following petition and send it to everyone you know. We also desperately need funds to head off this attack in the weeks and months to come. Thank you for your support. Together we will take back citizen control over organic standards and preserve organic integrity.

Call the Capital Switchboard here: 877-762-8762, and tell your Congresspersons not to support any ammendments to the ag appropriations bill that would lower organic standards. You can send a quick letter to your Congresspersons online here: www.organicconsumers.org/rd-ofpa.htm

COOL - Country of Origin Labels (Buy Local)

Several weeks ago, some members of the House of Representatives
inserted
language into the House Appropriations bill that would delay country of
origin labeling (COOL) for yet another year, until 2007. Yet COOL
advocates are putting up a fight over this stalling tactic; Dennis
Rehberg, a Montanan Republican Representative, is going to offer an
amendment that would strip the COOL delay from the Appropriations bill,
and restore COOL implementation to 2006.

Montana leadership on COOL is strong; they recently passed a state law
that would require beef, pork, poultry and lamb products to be labeled
with their country of origin in 2006, if the federal law does not go
into effect. Other states, specifically Wyoming, Kansas, North Dakota
and South Dakota, already require meat retailers to clearly label
imported meat with the country of origin. And COOL for seafood was
implemented this spring on the national level. However, we need to
implement COOL nationally for fruits, vegetables, and meat products.

Country of origin labeling is important because it can benefit both
consumers, who will be able to make an informed choice and buy food
produced closer to home, and producers, who need a way to identify
their
crops and livestock as products of the United States. Consumer surveys
clearly indicate that consumers want COOL for a variety of reasons;
including a desire to buy food domestically, avoid mad cow disease risk
and certain pesticide residues, and make purchases based on other food
safety concerns.

The repeated delays on COOL are unacceptable! Send an email to your
Representative, urging them to support Rehberg's amendment, and ensure
COOL's timely implementation at:

Alert from the Organic Consumers Association (OCA)

Organics at a Crossroads

"Regime change" seems to be in the air this fall; whether we are talking about personal lifestyle changes, converting the marketplace, or transforming the political arena. Millions are saying "No!" to junk foods, frankenfoods, pesticides, industrial agriculture, and the general "Wal-Martization" of American life.

Hopeful trends, such as the growth of the organic food and holistic health sector, suggest that a critical mass of consumers are beginning to comprehend that our personal and family's health and well-being are directly related to what we eat and drink, what we breathe into our lungs, and what we wear or apply to our skin.

In terms of organic food, demand is growing so fast that most grocery items sold in North American and European supermarkets will likely be labeled "organic" within 20 years. The question is, how "organic" will they be? Genetically engineered crops, namely corn, canola, cotton, and soybeans, are already starting to contaminate the fields and seed stocks of organic and traditional indigenous farmers. Big corporations are lining up to buy out organic companies, monopolize retail outlets, and work with government bureaucrats to lower organic standards.
http://www.organicconsumers.org/organic/save090604.cfm

The biotech and agri-toxics lobby are planting stories in the press, claiming that organic foods are neither safer nor better than industrial foods.
http://www.organicconsumers.org/organic/attack090704.cfm

Congress doles out $25 billion a year to subsidize biotech and industrial agriculture, while family farmers, who desperately need help to convert to organic and sustainable practices, are getting next to nothing.

And finally, global treaties such as NAFTA and the WTO are programmed for disaster, designed to enthrone biotech and industrial agriculture, while driving two billion farmers and rural villagers off the land and into urban slums.
http://www.organicconsumers.org/corp/slums090604.cfm

We need to meet up and move together, as a massive organic consumer bloc and body politic, and change course.
*
We need to raise significant funds and raise mass consciousness.
*
We need to reward the farmers, the organic companies, and the politicians who are doing the "right thing," and put the "Biodevastators" on notice that regime change is coming.
* What You Can Do:

Vote with your consumer dollar! By supporting products and businesses that are established on the principles of Fair Trade and sustainable agriculture, you're putting your money where your mouth is. One way you can save money, support positive products, and the OCA, all at the same time, is by purchasing a $10 OCA Organic Coupon book, containing up to $400 worth of savings on nationally distributed products (for a detailed list of coupons, click here).

Please give us your support now, so we can expand our nationwide public education and mobilization activities... both before and after the upcoming November elections.

Save money and help the OCA by buying one or more of the OCA's Organic Coupon Books for $10 (up to $400 in savings). See a detailed list of the coupons here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/coupons/index.cfm

Finally a healthy solution!

Hello, Jay and Shelley here,
Got some new exciting information for you - have a read!

As you know - my "big picture" is to eliminate expenses through healthy choices with a consumable product. It is true, I have been researching a company over the past 4 months after first being exposed to them at the Health symposium in the latter of 2004.

Shelley and I have decided to add it to our expense elimination program for the following reasons:
1) It is an amazing substitution to products we purchase weekly and highly consumable.
2) The products are highly versatile and create a very healthy environment for our home and bodies.
3) The testimonials are incredible both here in Canada and the US ( I witnessed it firsthand at the Richmond Private Golf & Country Club at a hosted event by the top Canadian Distributor)
4) The products replace the following products we use daily ( which by the way may have harmful ingredients such as Propylene Glycol, DEA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Alcohol, Aluminum, Talc and many more. Here are the everyday products they replace:
a) Body soap, hand soap, bath soap,
b) toothpaste
c) Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturizer ( body, face )
d) First Aid applications, Sunburn applications,
e) Greens products and Flax products
f) Laundry soap, Dish soap
g) Body deodorant, under arm deodorant
h) House cleaners, auto cleaners
and the list goes on........

To sum up: Many applications with health and safety paramount, very exciting, lateral spending from purchases we make weekly, monthly etc. ( no new added expense! ) with the ability to reduce everyones expenses, increase vitality and overall health and create a healthy harmonious home & body environment, only in the US and Canada presently and ofcourse fits in with Shelley and I's Expense Elimination Program we have implemented for 2005.

Footnote: I polled a few of my most sceptical friends that have always looked down on products such as this and here is the responses I received:

"Jay, from all the products you have shown us - these products interest us because it just makes sense"

"Shelley and Jay, you've really hit something big with this - we're definitely looking at this product line for our family and home"

"We're interested! When can we have a look at this website!"

"My wife who absolutely has no time for these products but is considering this line because of it's logic and the lateral spending of monies we spend already with the opportunity to get it really healthy as we progress in age"

I think you will agree that this has the potential to serve your body in a way we have never tapped into before, it's not a fad or a trend just a healthy solution to live in a very non-toxic environment.

If you check out www.JaysVentures.com you will see it partnered up with our Xango Juice nutritional line - a fine addition.

Has anyone seen any good documentaries that are about the environment? More specifically, have you seen documentaries that are about environmental issues in general or organic food?

Some interesting ones that I have seen are:
1. Bill McDonough & Michael Braungart "The Next Industrial Revolution" (thenextindustrialrevolution.org/)
2. Biomimicry
3. The Corporation
4. Exporting Harm (about E-waste in China)

I would be very interested to know if you all have any more recommendations for films of this kind, along with HOW to get a copy! I am building a collection and testing them out to see which kinds of messages, presentations, etc. people resond to the best.

Thanks!

colored organic cotton

www.tsdesigns.com - organic cotton clothing made a business that runs its office on solar power and its vehicles on fast food grease. It should be noted that this company carries Sally Foxy's COLORED organic cotton, meaning that it is cotton grown in different colors, not white, thus preventing the waste associated with this step in production AND producing clothes that actually gain color rather than lose it as you wear them!
